Watch US Horse Racing Live in the UK
Horse racing in the United States combines history, spectacle, and fierce competition in a way few other sports match. From legendary racetracks with soaring spires to modern turf courses, there’s a huge variety of venues, event styles, and ways to watch — even from the UK. Below is a primer on the major racetracks, what makes them special, and how UK fans can follow the action live at home on pc, mobile or tablet!

What U.S. Racing Offers: Types, Surfaces & Events
Understanding what you’re watching is almost as important as watching itself. Here are some of the dimensions that vary:
Surface: Dirt is traditional; turf (grass) is common for many races, especially where European influences are strong; synthetic (artificial surfaces) are used in some tracks.
Type: Flat racing (where horses run over level ground or gentle slopes) is the most common, but there’s also harness racing (horses pull a cart, the sulky) and quarter-horse racing (short sprints over about a quarter mile).
Meetings & Seasonality: Many tracks have seasonal meets — e.g. Kentucky Downs has a shorter season, Belmont Park has spring & fall meets. Some tracks operate nearly year round (weather permitting). Graded Stakes & Triple Crown: Top races like the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes are “Grade I” events and generate global interest. Other tracks host their own stakes races which may not have the same profile, but are critically important to certain trainers and breeders.
Personally, i've always been a big fan of American racing. UK races typically stop around 8pm, with just one or maybe two meetings available for those finishing work at your standard 5pm time in GB. American racing, due to time zone differences, runs through the late evening hours and i've enjoyed countless hours watching the various tracks across the USA, especially the big events like the Kentucky Derby.

Major U.S. Racetracks:
The United States is home to some of the most iconic horse racing venues in the world, each with its own character and history. At the top of the list is Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, which has hosted the legendary Kentucky Derby since 1875. Its twin spires and roaring crowds make it a true symbol of American racing tradition. In New York, Belmont Park is renowned for staging the Belmont Stakes, the final and most demanding leg of the Triple Crown. Its long homestretch and wide turns test both stamina and strategy, often determining racing immortality. Down south, Kentucky Downs offers something entirely different — a European-style turf course with rolling hills and shorter meets, attracting turf specialists and international trainers alike. On the West Coast, Santa Anita Park in California is celebrated for its breathtaking mountain backdrop and has hosted multiple Breeders’ Cup events. Nearby, Del Mar Racetrack, located “where the turf meets the surf,” delivers a unique coastal atmosphere that draws both serious punters and casual fans every summer. Together, these tracks represent the diversity of American horse racing — from dirt to turf, coast to coast, tradition to innovation.
Key Platforms for UK Viewers:
For fans in the United Kingdom, watching live U.S. horse racing has become easier than ever thanks to several streaming and betting platforms. At The Races offers its Stateside Live coverage through the ATR Player, providing streams of many major American meetings for a subscription fee. Bet365 is another popular option, allowing account holders to stream the action live at home or on the move with a mobile or tablet device. Racing TV and related services also feature international coverage, occasionally including simulcasts from tracks like Belmont Park and Gulfstream. Each platform has its own rights agreements, so availability can vary depending on the race and region. It’s worth noting that time zone differences mean U.S. races often air late in the evening or overnight for UK audiences. Still, with fast streaming technology and wide access through betting accounts or subscriptions, following American racing from the UK has never been more accessible.
