Swindon Stadium (also known as the Abbey Stadium) sits in Blunsdon, on Lady Lane, Swindon, Wiltshire. It has been a fixture in UK greyhound racing for decades, though in recent times its future has become uncertain.
The stadium opened in 1949, initially for speedway with the Swindon Robins, and greyhound racing followed three years later, on 1 November 1952. It took over from earlier, smaller and short-lived tracks around Swindon (e.g. in Wroughton and Edinburgh Street) that had closed by the mid-1930s. Over time, it became regulated by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain and has held a number of well-known races.
The track circumference is 452 metres. Distances raced include: 285 m, 460 m, 480 m, 509 m, 685 m, 733 m. Hurdles over 480m are also run. The stadium capacity is about 2,000 spectators. The hare system used is the Swaffham Outside Hare with a black & white windsock lure.
While perhaps not the largest stadium, Swindon has punched above its weight in UK greyhound racing. Its long straights and wide bends have allowed for fast, open races. The track has been home to puppy events of national repute, and several records set there are well remembered. It’s also served as a regional hub in the west/south-west, providing racing opportunities in Wiltshire where fewer tracks are available.
